Emberfall, a playable arcade game where you defend a forest through prep seasons and fire seasons. In prep seasons you reduce fuels: thin crowded patches with a crew, plant regular or climate-adapted seedlings, spray verbenone against beetles, and run a prescribed burn that leaves lower-flammability ground. In fire season you respond with a water tank for dousing, fire lines, and air support against embers and spreading fire. You can also send a beaver to fell a mature tree and dam a pool that shields nearby trees from fire. Resources are separate: a water tank for dousing, a crew for thinning and lines, a nursery for seedlings, and canisters for spray. Dense forests carry fire faster; thinned, burned, and flooded areas slow it; cheatgrass in the open flares fast and torches the tree it touches; high winds block prescribed burns; beetles kill trees and snags breed more; and climate pressure makes fire seasons harder over time. Prescribed burns are followed by wildflower blooms and pollinators, and a varied, biodiverse stand draws back wildlife; building and sustaining high biodiversity in a resilient forest wins the game.
